Pickleball is a sport that combines elements of badminton, tennis, and table tennis. Two or four players play with rackets made of wood or composite materials through a net with a perforated polymer ball similar to a Wiffle ball. Pickleball emerged in the mid-1960s as a backyard game for children. In some countries, pickleball is recognized as the fastest-growing sport.

PickleBall – What’s This?
PickleBall is a ball sport that combines elements of badminton, tennis, and table tennis. While PickleBall is very similar to tennis, there are important differences that make Pickleball more accessible to a wider range of players, especially boxers.
These differences lie in the speed of the ball, which is usually one-third of the average speed of a tennis ball.
Equally important, however, is the size of the court, which accounts for almost a third of the total area of a tennis court. Due to the smaller field and combined with a slower ball, PickleBall is much easier to play than tennis.
PickleBall is characterized by the dynamism of game processes and, thus, improves personal fitness. It requires concentration, good perception, and, in particular, promotes eye-hand coordination.
Young and old can compete against each other or just have fun playing together. Even if you didn’t have a tennis, badminton, or table tennis racket in your hand, you will be familiar with a new game in 15 minutes. The pleasure of playing whether in a relaxed or combative environment makes PickleBall so popular.
According to USAPA – the PickleBall Association of America – there are currently about 2.5 million active members and it is estimated that there will be up to 8 million by 2021.
The History of Pickleball
The game appeared in the summer of 1965 on Bainbridge Island, Washington, at the home of Joel Pritchard, who was elected to the US House of Representatives in 1972 and later became Governor of Washington State. He and two of his friends, Bill Bell and Barney McCallum, returned from golf one Saturday afternoon and found their families bored. They wanted to organize a badminton game, but no one could find a shuttlecock. Then they made plywood rackets, lowered the badminton net to the ground, and started playing with the Wiffle ball.
Why is Pickleball Interesting?
Pickleball is easy to learn. This game is energetic and very cozy, due to the fact that due to the small distance between the players, there is space for friendly jokes and communication.
Pickleball, despite its simplicity, not only burns calories perfectly but also improves reaction, as well as skills for playing regular tennis. Fun, simple, effective. This is a useful sports game for boxers who want to actively spend their free time and at the same time improve coordination, agility, and reaction.
What do You Need to Play Pickleball?
Equipment. The most important part of your gear is your paddle. There are many different racquets that both beginners and professionals can play. In this article, I have provided you with the 12 best pickleball paddles on the market to choose from.
Rules. There are many rules in pickleball that you must at least master the basics before you enter the field. For example, what are the boundaries of the playing field, how often can the ball bounce, or how do you even score?
Pickleball rackets are solid. They are made from various materials – wood, aluminum, graphite, composite materials. The cheapest, but also the heaviest are wooden. Rackets made of modern materials are much more expensive. The sum of the length and width of the racket should not exceed 61 cm. The standard size is 40×20.3 cm. The length and width change every 3 mm. The length of the handle and its girth change. Racket weight 170-340 grams. Handle girth – 100-115 mm. There are no restrictions on the thickness and weight of the racket in the rules. In my article, you can choose your racket by size, weight, design, and pocket.
Pickleball ball. This ball is made from plastic, hollow, with holes. Different balls are used for playing outdoors and indoors. An open-air ball has smaller holes, but larger holes. You can play with a floorball ball. A floorball ball is stiffer and stronger because it is designed to be hit with a stick, not a racket.
Pickleball court. The pickleball court has dimensions: length -13.41 m, width 6.10 m. The lane lines enter the court area. The size of the non-playing area is 2.13m on each side of the net. The net is fixed at a height of 0.91m at the sidelines and 0.86m in the center. There must be enough space behind the back and sidelines for players to move safely. The same court is used for singles and doubles.
How to Play Pickleball?
The game starts with a draw. The winner chooses the side of the court, and the loser chooses who to serve. Or vice versa: the winner is who to serve, and the loser is the side of the court.
Points are awarded only to the serving team (for winning their own services, for the opponent’s mistakes). They usually play up to 11 points. In this case, the difference in the score must be at least two points. That is, you cannot win with the score – 11:10. A match usually consists of three games, that is, it is played to two wins. But a match can also consist of one game up to a score of 15 or 21 points. There are other options as well.
After the end of each game, the teams change sides of the court and the right to serve. In a three-game match, the teams switch sides in the third game, after one of the teams scores 6 points. The right to serve remains with the serving player. In a game of up to 15 points, the change of sides occurs when one of the teams scores 8 points. When playing up to 21 points, a change is made when one of the teams scores 11 points.
Innings. The signal to start the game is the announcement of the score by the referee. The serving team’s scores come first, then the receiving team’s scores, then the serving player’s number. For example 3-2-1. The teams then have 10 seconds to start the game.
The first to serve is the player of the serving team in the right service court. If the serving team wins the serve, the first player moves to the left service pitch and serves from there. So he changes the pitch while he wins. In this case, the players of the receiving team remain in their places. If the serving team loses the service, the service passes to the second player. He serves from the service field where the first player was before the service was lost. If he wins, he changes the pitch. If the serving team also allows the second loss of service, then the right to serve passes to the opponent, to the player in the right service court.
- The innings are from the backline. The ball is kicked from below. The racket should pass below the belt. After being hit, the ball must cross the court diagonally to the opposite side, past the non-playing area.
- On each side of the net, there is a two-meter wide non-playing area. While in it, the player has no right to hit the ball on the fly.
- At the beginning of the game, each side strikes the first ball only after it has bounced off the court (except for the server itself). After two bounces, one on each side, hits can be applied to both the flying ball and the ball bouncing off the court.
Pickleball is a fun and modern game. It can be played by both adults and children from beginners to professionals. As you already understood, pickleball develops endurance, coordination, accuracy, and reaction, which will benefit boxers. If you have not yet decided on the choice of the paddle, I advise you this Niupipo Pickleball Paddle option. It is a durable paddle that is comfortable and easy to hold in your hand. It is made with high-quality materials and will last you for years.
